Essential Fallout 4 Mods for a First Playthrough

3 min readApr 11, 2020

As a Fallout fanatic, I can’t recommend anything lore-breaking for your first run. Use these quality of life mods to ensure that you have the best time possible experiencing the story and world on your first playthrough!

Full Dialogue Interface

Fallout 4, to much disdain, dropped the previous games’ dialogue systems for one-word reactions that sometimes tell you what your character is going to say. Full Dialogue Interface will make the role-playing part of this RPG much better and generally improve dialogue overall.

Unofficial Patch

The Unofficial Patch just ensures you won’t have any crashes and helps some mods work together. Not much else to say but thank you to the folks that put it together.

Darker Nights

Even if you’re not interested in a horror run, Darker Nights will overhaul the lighting of your game to be more immersive and realistic. I prefer the darkest setting, but there’s plenty of customization available here.

Looks Menu Customization Compendium

Fallout 4’s character creator is already pretty good, but couldn’t it be better? This mod introduces hundreds of new customization options, so whether you’re recreating a beloved fictional character or trying to make a hotter version of yourself, you’ll be covered.

Vivid Weathers

The title really says it all, but this mod adds many new weather systems and enhances the ones that are already there.

Insignificant Object Remover

This may not seem like much to you, but if you’re into settlement building it’ll change your life. All of the random crap on the ground will be cleaned up, leaving you to truly customize the look and feel of your towns.

Enhanced Color Correction

The picture above should tell you all you need to know. A lighting and color overhaul that drastically increases contrast and makes every color you see “pop” just a bit more.

Reverb and Ambiance Overhaul

Sound is one of those things in games developers hope you don’t even notice — because that means it’s good. Fallout 4 actually has excellent sound systems, but this mod will make the reverb from gunfire and talking sound real. Maybe a little too real.

I’ll be sure to put up another post later on with mod recommendations for your 2nd, 3rd, and 15th run! Stay safe out there in the wasteland.
